‘Soup and a Song’ at the Sailing Club

MAR 23, 2018 - SOPHIE

Despite the cold and snow on Saturday evening, the 18th of March, an enthusiastic bunch braved the elements to enjoy an evening of soup and songs at Caernarfon Sailing Club.

Following the success of the Welsh rugby team against France earlier in the day, the French onion soup, prepared by Nici Beech and the kitchen staff at Galeri, was just what was needed to warm up the crowd!

It was a privilege to welcome the local musician and a very familiar name to the town’s pubs and societies by now, Gwilym Bowen Rhys, to entertain the audience with a wonderful selection of folk and original songs. It was also a pleasure to welcome the poet Iestyn Tyne, who read a selection of his poems that will feature in his new volume of poetry, due to be published this summer.

The highlight was the joint performance including a violin duet and songs, with the audience joining in to sing the familiar classics ‘Does unman yn debyg i gartref’ and ‘Tân yn Llŷn’ to finish off the evening!

The main objective of the evening was to raise money towards the festival fund, to ensure that it can continue to be held free of charge for all to enjoy.  It was therefore wonderful to add £243 to that fund!

“I enjoy Gŵyl Fwyd Caernarfon each year, and appreciate all the hard work involved in ensuring the event’s success.  It was therefore lovely to be able to contribute to an evening of raising funds for that cause. We had a lot of fun entertaining – and the soup was delicious!” – Iestyn Tyne

The Committee would like to thank the staff at the Sailing Club for use of the premises and to Galeri, DJ Fruits, Penningtons, Nici Beech and Geraint Lovgreen for their contributions towards the evening.  And of course, an extremely warm thanks to Gwilym Bowen Rhys and Iestyn Tyne for taking time out of their busy schedules to support us!
